Southern California: where the sun shines year-round, the beaches are beautiful and the public cloud regions are non-existent.
Quick quiz question (and an alliteration!): Which one of these things is not like the others?
Until now, the answer would have been, ‘D: None of the Above’ because all three of those things were true. Well, guess what? The sun is still shining and the beaches are still beautiful, but SoCal is about to get its first ever major public cloud region, courtesy of our friends at Google!
On June 26th, Google will be unveiling their new cloud region in Los Angeles, and the Shamrock team will be showing up in force to celebrate. Be sure to ping your point of contact at Shamrock or reach out to us at email@example.com. We’d love to see you there!
What Up with GCP?
Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is, of course, the public cloud offering from Google, providing scalable IT compute, storage and networking services to businesses. It wasn’t all that long ago that GCP was thought of as the little brother to AWS and Azure. Now, though, little bro has been hitting the gym and crushing protein supplements, because GCP is all beefed up and quickly becoming the go-to cloud platform for enterprise businesses.
GCP has been stepping their game up over the last 18 months, adding a multitude of new regions to their cloud offering for increased user flexibility. At the Google Cloud Next event in March of 2017, they announced three new regions, bringing their global total up to an even 10. They’ve also got plans to introduce at least 7 more regions in the near future – sort of your cloud version of knocking out two-a-days at the gym. In other words, Google’s getting that beach body.
Sure, all of those shiny new regions are nice, but we’re here to talk specifically about the new GCP Los Angeles region set to be unveiled on Tuesday, in conjunction with three new zones in the surrounding area.
A Historic First for Los Angeles
The importance of GCP’s 5th and newest U.S. region can’t be understated for businesses in Southern California, specifically Los Angeles, especially considering the nearest region had previously been in Oregon, with the second closest all the way out in Iowa. Sheesh.
Here’s just a taste of what Google’s new LA region means for SoCal businesses:
Sub-millisecond latency for all businesses in and around Los Angeles
Expansive enterprise tool-sets
Smoother SaaS and PaaS thanks to faster and more reliable data transfer
Accelerated in-house app development
Media and entertainment workflows that can easily and quickly be moved to cloud
More competitive service level agreements (SLAs)
All of the above features offer huge benefits for any business in the area either currently using or thinking about using cloud IT services, but especially so for the bevy of local media and entertainment companies, who will be able to streamline their production schedules like never before. Lights, camera, cloud!
